Tips for Traveling and Renting in Barcelona and Costa Brava - Catalunya
Barcelona has a place in many tourists’ hearts with its varied districts, distinctive Catalan cuisine and culture, Gothic cathedral and churches, seaside locale, and the stunning presence of Spanish architectural pioneer Antoni Gaudí’s buildings and mosaics. The second largest city in Spain and capital of the Catalunya region, Barcelona is a metropolis with a palpable energy that sparks the imagination of writers and artists, and urges tourists to explore its juxtaposition of ancient character and youthful artistry. Art aficionados will want to visit the Picasso Museum to see how this artist’s early work informed those famed later pieces, and check out the distinctive art of this region at the Catalan Art Museum and Fundació Joan Miró. And, of course, no trip to Barcelona would be complete without seeing some of Gaudí’s fantastical buildings up close. Take your pick as your interest and time dictate, and see: Sagrada Família—Gaudí’s astounding incomplete cathedral—Casa Milà—an intriguing curved building—and the Block of Discord—Gaudí and fellow Modernista architects’visionary facades on a stretch of buildings. You may also wish to see the Palau Güell, with its interior chiseled in Gaudí’s characteristic curves.
In addition to the spectacular gothic and Modernista buildings of Barcelona’s skyline, the Mediterranean glitters beyond the gentrified waterfront which was revitalized for the 1992 summer Olympics. Sports fans will appreciate the world-class soccer stadium here that is recognized as the largest in Europe. You can tour areas of Barcelona on foot, such as the Ramblas—a lively pedestrian-only stretch of shops and cafes—or take a funicular that spans a section of the Mediterranean to view Barcelona’s vast footprint from above. Some travelers enjoy previewing an area by reading guide or history books. If you enjoy unusual novels, you might consider a different approach and read Spanish writer Carlos Ruiz Zafón’s surreal and engaging book, The Shadow of the Wind, set in this amazing city. When your senses are sated with Barcelona’s charms, pack up your beach wear and head down the coast to Sitges.
