What’s not to love about the French Riviera, with its azure bays along miles of coastline, fabulous French culture and cuisine, and a sunny climate? Certain iconic images often come to mind about this legendary place: the casinos of Monte Carlo, mingling celebrities at the Cannes Film Festival, yachts lolling off the coast of St. Tropez, and oiled sun-worshippers anchoring the beaches in Nice… It’s a natural paradise with many hedonistic pleasures waiting to be enjoyed! However, in the sweltering heat of July and August it is thick with tourists and the prices are at their highest. But don’t worry, this month we’ll share our secret for avoiding the crowds and saving money, and take you on a trip through Nice and the unique inland villages of St. Paul de Vence and Grasse.
Travel During the Shoulder Season:
For frequent travelers and those who relish elbow-room as they tour museums, plazas, and beaches, there is hope—there is the shoulder season. From April through mid-June, and September and October, tourist numbers plummet and so do prices. Shoulder season travelers benefit from enticing discounts in meals, tours, and even airfare which can be half the price of high-season travel. The streets are quieter and the atmosphere laid-back, and you’re more likely to have a pleasant conversation with a local when you’re not moving as part of a herd through the streets! Traveling during the shoulder season opens up more options, especially in places like lovely Nice which boasts an average of over 300 sunny days annually. Consider playing in your own backyard this summer and planning a European get-away during the spring or fall instead.
