Tips for Traveling and Renting in Sitges & surroundings
In Barcelona’s backyard, just about 20 miles to the south, lies Sitges, a former fishing village and artist haven that beckons travelers with its miles of white sand beaches and hospitality. Artists and travelers alike will find Sitges beautifully picturesque with its palm tree-lined paved promenade along the beachfront, a gorgeous Baroque church anchoring its waterfront, and elegant medieval buildings that shape the town. Adding to its striking appearance, Sitges is tucked against the Mediterranean sea by the Catalan Coastal mountains and benefits from a microclimate that keeps its weather comfortably mild and dry. Undoubtedly, the biggest draw to Sitges are its are seventeen pristine beaches (raked daily) along a 2 ½ mile expanse of coastline, which afford plenty of space to accommodate singles, families, gay travelers, and even nudists with their own beach. While the beaches can get quite crowded, rocky cliffs hug the shore and create private coves and shady nooks for escaping the sun. You can also cool off with a drink or nibble on tapas at one of the chiringuitos (seaside bars) along the beach. When you’ve lounged enough, you can rent a jet ski or amble down to Aiguadolç beach where you will find showers, volleyball nets, and hammocks for a nap in between your activities.
Charms of Sitges:
While Sitges is a popular tourist destination, its charms remain unspoiled. Traditional wrought-iron accented white buildings, opulent villas, and a historic center graced by art museums, boutiques, and cafes along narrow pedestrian-only streets continue to enchant visitors and retain their original luster. The arts are exuberant here, with art museums, summer concerts, and an international film festival yearly, attracting world-renowned directors and actors who gather for film screenings and award ceremonies. Be sure to visit the Museu Cau Ferrat—a 16th century villa built for painter Santiago Rusiñol—which houses works by Picaso, El Greco, glass and ceramic art, and an expansive collection of wrought iron pieces. Catalan traditions are also upheld in this little village, such as the Fiesta Major. Each August, Sitges’ honors its patron saint, Sant Bartomeu with a fantastical parade of gigantic puppets and fireworks display, which is one part tradition and one part party. Sitges’ many nightclubs also offer a party atmosphere and cater to everyone, gay and non-gay alike. Thirty miles inland from Sitges, lies the famous Penedès region which grows the vast majority of Spain’s grapes.
