  • Description

On the ridge of the hills between Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta, in an expansive 18th century park, a local Italian family built a modern, prestigious country estate for their own family vacations. Now these two houses are available to families and groups wanting to spend a holiday in a roomy, comfortable, particularly charming environment. Vergante Estate offers two prestigious villas for different vacation solutions. The Main Villa is, of course, at the heart of the property, in terms of both position and importance. It measures about 250 square meters on each of the three floors and it is suitable for 10-13 guests. The Castellino (the Small Castle), is an old farm building that has been converted into a charming house that rises upwards to culminate in a turret offering a perfect spot for stargazing. This house is ideal for five to seven guests. The third residence is occupied by the caretaker/housekeeper/gardener who speaks both English and French. He is always available to provide any assistance needed during the guests' stay.

Included in the rental price: Garden and pool (open April - September) maintenance, linens and towels changed weekly, twice weekly cleaning of bedrooms and bathrooms, cleaning of the houses once a week, (except of the kitchens), assistance of full-time caretaker

Available upon request at additional cost: Basic foodstuffs upon arrival (50 Euros for 4/6 guests), daily breakfast (10 Euro/day per person), extra maid service

Pets will be considered. Maximum number of occupants is 20 (10 + 3 in the Villa and 5 + 2 in the Castellino). Cots/extra beds included in the price.

For smaller groups it is possible to reserve only the main villa for 13. Please inquire for prices. Discounts for multiple week reservations!

The Main Villa is an elegant, contemporary home completed in 1971. It has three floors measuring about 250 square meters each and is located in the center of the “new” part of the property, surrounded by big trees and flowerbeds. Three sides of the main floor (ground floor) is dedicated as a “living area”, with the living area itself on the side facing the park and utility areas on the side facing the courtyard and entrance.
As you walk into the Villa you find yourself in a spacious entrance hall with a lovely marble staircase leading to the upper floor. On the right is a wardrobe, a small but elegant guest bathroom and a door leading to the service area and the stairs to the basement. On the left, a large, elegant wooden door takes you into the living room, which is divided into three areas: one with sofas and a television, one with a card table and one with armchairs arranged around a fireplace.
A large window near the fireplace opens onto the arcade by the camellia walk and the big magnolia tree. Next to the entrance on the left is a small study with a writing desk and well-stocked bookshelves. The dining room offers a large table for twelve guests and another big plate-glass window with a view of the arcade on the lawn and the swimming pool. A hallway furnished with cabinets for storing dishes links the dining room with the fully equipped kitchen (large fridge, table for six, prep area with two sinks, gas stove and oven, microwave, dishwasher, and other small appliances). The kitchen leads to the storage area with another small refrigerator, a washing machine, an ironing board, and a wardrobe for storage. A south-facing patio opens up onto the entrance courtyard. The utility area is completed with a bathroom with bathtub and a servant’s room containing a queen bed and a large wardrobe.

The stairs to the upper floor lead to a large landing lit up by a big window, which opens up onto a balcony right above the entrance to the Villa. The entire upper floor consists of bedrooms, divided into two separate areas. The cozy master bedroom is furnished with a queen bed plus a child's cot and a ensuite bathroom with Jacuzzi bathtub. It has access to a balcony that overlooks the park and large olive tree. The other three bedrooms are ample-sized and have room for extra cots for children. These bedrooms share two bathrooms located in the hallway.

The basement is of course a utility area, with a big two-car garage, two wine cellars and a furnace room, but it also contains one of the most popular rooms in the house: the tavern with its large fireplace and play area. A small but very handy bathroom, with its own anteroom, completes the basement floor.

The second home, "Castellino", stands on the northern corner of the property, overlooking the old Piazza Marconi and the tiny lane, Vicolo Castello. The lane is not, as one might think, named after Castellino, but after an old castle that used to stand here. Some traces of the castle are believed to be conserved in a number of large stones incorporated in the walls of the building, and definitely in a large stone now surrounded by birch trees which was once the counterweight for the castle drawbridge. "Castellino" is actually an old farm building, originally a stable and a home for sharecroppers who worked for the old owners of the farm. As a result of extensive renovations in the 1980's, the interior of the building was adapted to match the decoration on the exterior: the ogival windows were opened up to illuminate the living room, a masonry spiral staircase was built to connect the three levels and give a purpose to the vertical orientation of this construction culminating in its turret, which was made useful by conversion into a lovely little sheltered patio for stargazing. Today it is, in fact, an incredibly charming and glamorous house, which in a certain way sacrifices a little of functionality and some spaces to a really original architecture in neo-romantic style.

At the corner between the square and the lane, in the shade of a big Japanese pittosporum, is the pedestrian entrance to Castellino. From the big entrance area you can take three steps down to the laundry room, where the washing machine is located, and to a semi-underground utility room (without windows, but absolutely cool and dry and provided with two emergency beds - for two teens for a few days it is comfortable enough) and a wine cellar. A masonry spiral staircase takes you up to the main floor. The living room has two magnificent ogival windows facing south, and is furnished with two comfortable sofas and a fold-up dining table. The kitchen has two sinks, four gas elements, an oven and a dishwasher. It also contains a dining table for six and a sideboard. You can go through the living room to a little study containing a desk and a small sofa, or to the ground floor bathroom, which has a shower. To get to the upper floor, you may take either the masonry spiral staircase inside or the stone staircase outside, which connects a balcony on the upper level to the courtyard below. The master bedroom opens onto this balcony. This bedroom has its own walk-in dressing room and a large bathroom with a tub and a shower. Down the landing is the twin bedroom (a third cot can be added), bathroom with shower, and the turret room (with single bed and wardrobe and a very narrow spiral staircase leading to a trapdoor, which takes you to the patio at the top of the tower).

Within the Estate grounds is a beautiful swimming pool for use exclusively by the guests staying in the two houses. The pool is equipped with a children’s slide and a spring diving board. Visitors can enjoy tanning in a large solarium with four sun beds. The lovely backdrop behind the pool area is a huge Park, measuring almost 10,000 square meters, planted in the 18th century and skillfully designed to blend large green spaces, paths, viewpoints, pools, terraces, greenhouses, paths, roads and many more points of interest. Planted in the 1700s and enriched over the years, the park has delights around every corner. There is The Camellia Walk, which starts at the wrought iron gate on Piazza Marconi. There is the lawn at the entrance, reached by the old copper gate. The Italian garden is reached via three stone steps from the Camelia Walk.
